Andrew James, having worked at both respected auctioneers, Tennants and Bonhams, decided to found Andrew James Art in London in 2005.
However they quickly found a new home for the gallery in the French Concession of Shanghai. The gallery, located in a magnificent traditional colonial mansion helped to highlight the regular exhibitions for artists from China, Japan and Korea. Artists, whose works were collected by museums such as New York MoMA and collectors from over thirty different countries.
Participating in art fairs from London to Miami via Korea and Japan whilst publishing hard back catalogues for the exhibitions, Andrew James Art helped introduce Asian art to new collectors.
The latest stage of Andrew James Art is a new gallery in the provincial capital of Sichuan, Chengdu. With a population of over 10 million people and the hometown of many of the leading artists in China they feel that this is the most developing city in China as well as the most friendly, located next to the Tibetan plateau it makes for a great balance of city and country life.
They regularly travel around Asia visiting artists, art fairs and auctions, they advise collectors in acquiring works from Asia. Meanwhile, having a regular presence in the United Kingdom they help Asian collectors to source traditional Chinese artworks from private collections and repatriate them to China.
