"They symbolize the isolation and restlessness of children. The objects around the frame are related, for comparison and juxtaposition.

When you add a frame it looks ornamental, and I wanted to make the dolls’ postures look really affected. At that time I was really into lavish European decor, like the pre-revolution French style, just before the collapse – incredibly lavish and decadent.

I was obsessed with their gaudily colored joints. They symbolize innocence, hopelessness, existence without aspirations."
