This is Asia?

Many of the works in the exhibition contradict one another often showing what it is to be Asian whereas others prove hard to tell they are Asian and could come from any country in the world.

Does it even matter that this is Asian art? Would we think it is better or worse if we knew which country it came from? Good art should come first, nationality a distant second. This show hopes to highlight some leading works from the contemporary art world, be it established artists or new up-and-coming artists. It aims to show that Asian art can be as good as any art in the word and deserves to be called contemporary art rather than the next trendy country defining label.

Includes work by;
Akino Kondoh, Chiho Aoshima, Dorothy M.Yoon, Feng Zhengjie, Han Yajuan, Hiroyuki Matsuura, Ken Matsuyama, Liang Binbin, Ling Jian, Liu Ye, Lin Jianrong, Miao Xiaochun, Sakuji Yoshimoto, Sheng Qi, Shin Youngmi, Shintaro Miyake, Sun Huiyuan, Xu Heng Yang Jing, Yang Maolin, Yang Shaobin, Yuichiro Ohmura, Zeng Lingxin, Zhang Xiaogang, Zhou Yilun

Zhou Yilun Solo Exhibition
"Just Joking"

I am please to introduce the second Zhou Yilun exhibition at Andrew James Art in Shanghai.

There are two things I quickly realized about the artist, the word "shocking" springs to mind. One he is a cool and funky individual with his Mohawk haircut, piercing and tattoos. He seems to lead a carefree life enjoying all the fun a young man can have in today's society. His warehouse studio/apartment strewn with paintings, discarded paint tubes, drum kits, mountain bikes, large sound system and a little cute cat!
The other thing I quickly noticed is that he has a real eye for art and is shockingly good. He has the ability to paint very classically and by the book but also the ability to be a free spirit and buck current trends. His paintings have a sense of freshness and youthfulness which is to be admired but also the maturity of a skilled hand. He is a driven young man who lives and breathes art and creativity but at the same time seems to have a punk, almost Banksy feel to his work. His friends call him "Pen Pen"˜ which is Chinese to spray paint.

We hope you enjoy this collection of paintings dating from 2007-2008.

Dorothy M (Miyeon Yoon) Solo Exhibition
"13 of Blondes"

Andrew James Art is proud to present Dorothy M.Yoon's work to China for the first time. Dorothy is a London-based Korean artist and studied MFA at Goldsmiths College of Art in London where she graduated in 2007.

With this body of work "13 of Blondes" Dorothy challenges stereotypes of Western and Asian beauty and also addresses her childhood desire to have blonde hair and blue eyes.

The artist who is a self confessed "Superstar Super Shy Girl" makes herself the centre of attention, portraying herself as "Venus" and declaring "I am Love"
Spend an evening with the artists you will come away from it thinking she is part movie star, part comedian, part model and 100% artist. She has a devilish sense of humour which is hinted at in her work and especially in her videos, which can't fail to put a rye smile on your face

The one thing that I always come away from looking at her work "13 of Blondes" is the sheer perfection of the photos which were painstakingly created to the last detail, the choice of the calligrapher for the Korean characters, the hair stylist, the wardrobe etc
If I had to summarize the work in one word it would be "Beauty"
